The purpose of this site is to share ideas, thoughts and information about “forgiveness” in general and Functional Forgiveness in particular. It will contain posts written by me as well as posts originated by others that are related to the subject of forgiveness.
Functional Forgiveness is a specialized system of approaching and applying the process of “forgiveness.” It is designed to incrementally increase the your proficiency at employing this process and gaining benefit from its judicious application.
WHAT IS FORGIVENESS?
Forgiveness is the intentional and voluntary process by which the wronged person undergoes a positive change in feelings, emotions and/or attitude regarding a specific, perceived offense, or forgiveness is the release of the negative emotions (anger, vengefulness, irritation, suffering or pain) resulting from such an offense. Also, through forgiveness, the harmful biological responses stimulated by the reactions to the offense are mitigated or stopped.
Forgiveness is different from condoning (refusing to see the action as wrong and in need of forgiveness), excusing (not holding the offender responsible for the action), forgetting (eliminating awareness of the offense from consciousness), pardoning (as granted by a societal representative, such as a judge), and reconciliation (restoration of a relationship).
Forgiveness, in some instances, is actually a legal term for absolving or giving up all claims on account of debt, loan, obligation, or other claims.
As a psychological concept and virtue, the negative effects and benefits of forgiveness have been explored in religious thought, the social sciences and medicine. Ideally, forgiveness is granted without any expectation of restorative justice, and without any response on the part of the offender (for example, one may forgive a person who is incommunicado or dead). In practical terms, however, it may be necessary for the offender to offer some form of acknowledgment such as an apology, or a request for forgiveness, in order for the wronged person to feel able to forgive.
